Increasing Alertness While On-Duty
There is no substitute for sleep. The best strategy for maintaining alertness while on duty is to come to work fully rested. However, when you are scheduled to work at certain times you may still experience fatigue and a possible decrease in alertness. Here are a few suggestions aon how to increase alertness while on duty:
- Increase your physical activity.
- Engage in conversation or some other social activity.
- Increase the amount of light or illumination in your immediate environment.
- Listen to stimulating music or other sounds.
- Get fresh air.
- Use caffeine strategically caffeine strategically.
- Develop CHECKLISTS for duties or activities that need to be performed when you know you will not be alert.
- Take planned OPPORTUNITY naps following company policies.
Remember, there is no substitute for sleep!!
