Increasing Your Sleep Quality

There is no substitute for sleep. The best strategy for maintaining alertness while on duty is to come to work fully rested. In order to come to work fully rested here are some suggestions to maximize your sleep quality:

  1. Keep regular sleep/wake times as possible.
  2. Develop a pre-sleep ritual or routine that signals to your body that it is time to sleep.
  3. Prioritize sleep - don't cheat on your sleep!
  4. Avoid bringing work or worries into the bedroom.
  5. Eat only a light snack or small drink before sleep.
  6. Maintain a quiet and dark environment - use ear plugs and eye shields if needed.
  7. Regulate temperature to correspond to your optimal needs - get comfortable!
  8. Use relaxation techniques to increase drowsiness.
  9. If you cant get to sleep in 30 minutes - get out of bed. Don't lie in bed TRYING to sleep.
  10. Remember, go to bed when sleepy!!
